Mt. Pleasant is known as a new-urbanist community because of the construction of swank suburban-style subdivisions being built throughout the community.
Residents, through a series of Community Visioning Summits, are working on ongoing community and renewal programs and projects with particular emphasis on economic development, education, family and community empowerment, physical environment and safety.
Anyone walking or driving along the streets and sidewalks of Mt. Pleasant can see a dynamic mosaic of family and community life. Along the tree-lined streets on any given day you can hear the gleeful sounds of youngsters playing or hear music playing, from teen-agers listening to “Hip Hop” or older adults listening to jazz, R&B, classical & gospel music. Along Kinsman Road are barbershops and beauty shops with patrons discussing everything from politics to sports to the news of the day. Above the hum of the familiar sound of lawn mowers can be heard the ordinary chatter of folks doing chores in and around their homes.
More than 23,000 people live in Mt. Pleasant and many of them own their homes, providing a foundation for strong community spirit, economic development, and family life.
A number of organizations work earnestly in partnership with individuals, organizations and businesses to try to keep Mt. Pleasant as a stable, well-informed community. They include: The Mt. Pleasant Community Zone (located in the building pictured above); the Murtis H. Taylor Multi Services Center (located in the building pictured below) and Kids Health 20/20 (located in the building pictured at the bottom of this page). Much of the renewal within Mt. Pleasant is the result of serious public discussion and having a number of people and organizations taking concerted and directed collective action to find a common ground for building a greater sense of community and institutional interdependence. Mt. Pleasant is indeed "A Pleasant Place to Be" as a result of everybody's work.
