Physical Environment and Safety

Like any other cosmopolitan community, Mt. Pleasant has an underground of people who live or visit the community to try to engage in dark crimes. However, due to a number of initiatives, the the number of reported crimes has dropped to 39.72 % during the past 20 years, making Mt. Pleasant one of the lowest in crimes per thousand persons in the City. Today’s crime-fighting initiatives include:

  • A zero tolererance for crime policy that is being implemented through surveillance cameras strategically placed throughout the neighborhood and through the engaging of block clubs.
  • A secondary security patrol force using Tenable Security has dramatically increased the number of street patrols.
  • A Weed and Seed Community Designation, which provides federal dollars to weed crime from the community and plant the seeds of growth.

As part of the Kinsman Road Revitalization Project, the sidewalks on Kinsman between E. 130th st. and E. 154th were redone. The crumbling cement sidewalks were replaced with bricks containing unique Afrocentric mudcloth patterns. Each piece of mudcloth tells a story. No two patterns are alike and each pattern has distinct color combinations that portray a special meaning or proverb.

The rich tapestry of this brickwork has become the signature of a community undergoing a revitalization of spirit, education, culture and business. The person who designed this unique Afrocentric sidewalk plan, Charles (Billy) Adams, died in 2005. The Mt. Pleasant Community is grateful for his work and for his dedication in making "Mt. Pleasant...A Pleasant Place to Be." His memory lives on with every step taken along his section of Kinsman Road. Link here to read Adams' complete biography.
